Reptile Ranch is now open!
After a lot of work and dedication, the Foot Safari keepers are thrilled to unveil the brand-new Reptile Ranch! Formerly the Discovery Zone, this revamped space has relocated and transformed into an exciting new home for some of the residents.
The Reptile Ranch is home to some of the rarest species in the park such as the Utila Spiny-tailed Iguana and Egyptian tortoises plus many more weird and wonderful species. While these amazing creatures are visible all day, you can catch the keeper talks and demonstrations for a closer look into the lives of these remarkable species.
The facility brings these fascinating and often overlooked species into the heart of the Foot Safari, right next to their larger cousins, the Giant Aldabra Tortoises. Designed to offer a more immersive experience for visitors, the new building also provides the animals with upgraded and thoughtfully designed enclosures. The keepers’ primary goal for this new space was to enhance husbandry practices and ensure the highest standards of animal welfare.
Catherine Doherty, Head of Section said: “Working closely with our welfare, research and conservation team it is our job, as animal keepers, to ensure an evidence based scientific approach to ensure holistic care for all our animals. The brand new habitats in the Reptile Ranch offers many features, complexity and choice, which replicate wild habitats of these species. One of the goals of creating the Reptile Ranch was to provide an environment that is within the adaptive range of each of our individual animals. This is accomplished by promoting good animal welfare practice.”
After months of careful planning and preparation, the animals were safely moved into their new home using strict transportation protocols to ensure their safety and well-being. Keepers have poured their hearts into the prep of this exceptional space, ensuring it’s perfect for both the animals and visitors eager to learn more about these captivating creatures.
